Midtown Atlanta Website
Welcome to Midtown, the cultural center of Atlanta, and the 2005 Midtown Neighbors' Association Tour of Homes.
In addition to many fine restaurants, Midtown is home to the Fox Theatre, High Museum of Art, Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Center for Puppetry Arts, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Woodruff Arts Center, and Piedmont Park.
We have an exciting collection of new and old houses, lofts and condos, reflecting Midtown's past, present, and future, making it the most sought after place to live in Atlanta.
The urban feel of Midtown, with the street activity and access to great entertainment and retail, draws all types of residents to the area. New construction, such as the 29-story Spire and the 20-story Plaza Midtown, provides a unique juxtaposition with the historically significant single-family homes and older apartment buildings. It is an exciting place to live and work.
Midtown was part of approximately 400 acres acquired by pioneer settler Richard Peters just north of North Avenue, the city limits at that time. Peters purchased the land for about $5 an acre around 1850. Peters, who was also a street railway owner, sold his lots as demand for homes followed the street car lines. Although the growth of Midtown was influenced by the availability of public transportation, Midtown was never a street car suburb like Inman Park or Virginia-Highlands.
In the 1890's Piedmont Avenue (originally Calhoun, renamed in 1892) was where upwardly mobile Atlantans wanted to build their homes. The 1890's saw home after home go up along both sides. Myrtle Street saw most of its development during the years between 1905 and 1920, and features homes which are less elaborate than those on Piedmont. Most of these houses are variations on the American Four Square theme of solid two story square homes, with ornamentation and details like porches used to give stylistic variety to the facades. Although many of the large homes have been broken into multi-family dwellings, the street retains its early 20th century ambiance.
Midtown Atlanta is home to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Woodruff Arts Center, Piedmont Park and the Fabulous Fox Theater. From bungalows to lofts, skyscrapers, restaurants and churches, Midtown is considered to be at the heart of Atlanta with all the creativity, energy and excitement connected with contemporary intown living.
